Who we are

For more than a decade, SiliconANGLE Media Inc. has dedicated itself to covering the massive, often underreported global impact of enterprise and emerging technologies, from semiconductors to computer and networking systems to the cloud, as well as the applications, cybersecurity, AI and machine learning, blockchain and other technologies built on top of that foundation. The company was formed by longtime entrepreneur, technology analyst, and SiliconANGLE Media Chief Executive John Furrier and Wikibon founder and veteran analyst Dave Vellante. With a pioneering focus on the technology and business of enterprise tech, we provide an unmatched combination of media properties: the reach of publishing on SiliconANGLE.com, the immediacy of live video with our onsite and studio-based video unit theCUBE, and depth of analysis with market researcher Wikibon. We aim to inform a broad audience, from decision-makers in the tech industry to businesspeople and developers who need clearly written insight into the technologies they need to keep their organizations agile to lay people curious to dig deeper into what really powers the cloud and their phones, computers and other devices. In recent years, as we seek to expand our mission to be the voice of enterprise tech, extracting the signal from the noise. We’ve steadily built up and reporting, analysis and thought leadership, and constantly advancing our ability to report with new voices. To do all that during a period in which many rival operations have cut back, sold out or shut down, we’ve steadily evolved a business model that can provide sustainable support for great journalism — one that isn’t dependent on the vagaries of traditional online advertising.

Our business model

Now, we have that model with theCUBE, which for a decade has been covering hundreds of events throughout the world, from the likes of AWS re:Invent, Linux Foundation, CloudNativeCon, Kubecon and Dell Technologies World, to our own events, such as Supercloud. We help create and cover events while providing opportunities to companies and other organizations to support and sponsor those events through onsite and virtual interviews with key executives, analysts and practitioners. After pivoting successfully to add virtual events during the pandemic, theCUBE now covers dozens of major events a year, both in-person and online using our two state-of-the-art studios in Palo Alto and Boston. Our business model is clear: SiliconANGLE and TheCUBE provides written word and video reporting four our audience and has a innovative advertising model with video. TheCUBE offers a media sponsorship service for brands. All sponsored content is fully disclosed and visible to users. Just as advertisers have no influence on coverage in other reputable mainstream media, sponsorship has no influence on our editorial coverage, and sponsors have no oversight of our content. With the innovative digital business model we can reinvest in growing the media business. As a result, we have built a globally distributed staff for SiliconANGLE.com and a well-oiled video operation at theCUBE. As this revenue stream grows, we are investing more in hiring journalists, editors and on-camera editorial personalities so we can provide better editorial coverage of cloud computing, cybersecurity, AI and machine learning, modern applications and developers, blockchain and Web3, and more.

John Furrier

As the founder of SiliconANGLE.com and co-CEO of SiliconANGLE Media Inc, I wear multiple hats. I oversee the editorial agenda as executive editor for SiliconANGLE.com. I also share the chief executive job with Dave Vellante, participate in business development and drive all new product development for SiliconANGLE Media Inc.

I recognize that there is also the possibility that these multiple roles as entrepreneur, CEO, co-host of @theCUBE and product developer can come into conflict, since I serve multiple constituencies. As a longtime industry participant, my goal has been and continues to maintain the highest levels of professionalism, fairness, objectivity, independence and transparency.

I write, edit and publish content on SiliconANGLE.com. Opinions and analysis expressed are my own and controlled by me. Readers should be aware that my opinions are influenced by the access I have to data and industry leaders.
Our video Internet TV operation, theCUBE, conducts unscripted interviews and distributes them widely over the Internet and on social media. TheCUBE is sponsor-supported and some organizations sponsor it as support for our ability to create content and develop community. Because we are an independent media organization and strive for transparent reporting, we label all sponsored content that appears on theCUBE. It is clearly disclosed as such and sponsors have no control over questions asked by theCUBE hosts or of content produced from interviews. Most of our interviews are conducted live and are considered “on the record.” As a matter of policy, we don’t edit the live content when posted on-demand. Additionally, all live “on the record” live TV content can and is used, with disclosures, in stories by our writers.

Over the course of my career, I developed a set of opinions shaped by my computer science, corporate and entrepreneurial experiences. Those opinions are favorable to innovation, high integrity individuals, and startups that take the risks in trying to create and build the future.

I have not been formally educated in journalism. I carry no dogma about how journalism should be. Instead, I believe in fairness, data journalism, community and the wisdom of the crowd, privacy and the truth. These are the guiding principles that help me navigate this new world of media that we are helping to disrupt and re-create.

I don’t invest directly in the companies I cover. My investments are managed at arm's length by professionals in a diversified portfolio of stocks, funds and other financial vehicles with an allocation that fluctuates with market cycles and technical and fundamental trends. I don’t attempt to use my knowledge of technology companies and markets to profit in the stock market.

Dave Vellante

As a longtime industry analyst, my goal is to maintain the highest levels of objectivity, independence and transparency. I’m well aware that the analyst business is often criticized as being “pay to play.” I want to address how I deal with the inherent conflicts in the business and invite you to comment on and challenge my positions if you have concerns.

Readers should be aware that I write and consult for many of the companies that I cover and my firm, of which I am a co-CEO, receives revenue from companies that I analyze. To that end, this statement describes my ethics as an analyst, writer and business person, how I manage potential conflicts of interest and the way in which SiliconANGLE Media operates.

SiliconANGLE Media’s business model depends substantially on sales of its products and services to technology sellers who we refer to as clients. We have three sources of revenue: 1) theCUBE live and on-demand TV; 2) Wikibon Research and 3) Digital experiences that aggregate content from theCUBE, Wikibon and other properties, and distribute that content to targeted communities.

TheCUBE conducts unscripted interviews and distributes them widely over the Internet and on social media. Organizations sponsor theCUBE because of its reach and ability to create content quickly. All sponsored content from theCUBE is clearly disclosed as such and clients have no control over questions asked by theCUBE hosts. Most of our interviews are conducted on live TV and as a matter of policy, we don’t edit the live content when posted on-demand.

Wikibon is the research arm of SiliconANGLE Media. Wikibon publishes analysis on Wikibon.com and SiliconANGLE.com. Wikibon sells subscription services and from time-to-time gets paid to publish content that is underwritten by clients. Clients pay for the data-gathering effort but not the analysis and clients have no control over content created by Wikibon analysts. Historically Wikibon did not disclose when data gathering was underwritten. Our policy was such that clients did not get to see the written analysis until it was made public by Wikibon and any comments or changes (when warranted) were made under public scrutiny. However, we felt this approach was too opaque and have changed our policy. Going forward, content created from underwritten projects clearly discloses this fact. As well, underwriters are now allowed to review the content prior to publication, but only for technical and pricing accuracy.

I write, edit and publish content on Wikibon.com and SiliconANGLE.com. Opinions and analysis expressed are my own and controlled by me. Readers should be aware that my opinions are influenced by the access I have to data. Often clients will provide favorable data points and access to “friendly” customers in an effort to support their arguments; however, I always endeavor to find alternative and opposing points of view from competitors and competitors’ customers. The analysis from this “opposing view” data is always included in my works.

Readers should also be aware that as a business person, writer and analyst, I manage relationships with many companies and SiliconANGLE’s business depends, in part, on my ability to create lasting and financially profitable relationships with these organizations. Often I consult with these firms and assist them with strategy, go-to-market choices, partnerships and competitive positioning. I am influenced by these interactions in the sense that the more contact I have with companies and their employees/ecosystems, the more informed I become about their products, services and strategies. However, I never alter my opinions for a fee and I always strive to be objective, produce independent analysis and seek alternative views to include in my analysis. Moreover, I pledge to you the reader/listener that I will always try my hardest to write content that is useful, informative and objective to end customers.

We believe this provides a more stable and less traffic-dependent alternative to ad-supported models for media and journalism.

Neither these clients nor conference sponsors have control over questions asked by interviewers on theCUBE or editing of interview videos or stories written from interviews. Interviews from shows for which theCUBE is paid to cover, or individual sponsored interviews, are identified with disclosures.

I commission, edit, report and write stories independent of influence from clients of SiliconANGLE Media or theCUBE. I may write about conferences for which theCUBE has been hired to do interviews with executives; those clients have no influence on or oversight of my stories. I also may write stories that mention upcoming conferences to be covered by theCUBE; conference clients and sponsors have no influence on those stories and the mentions are not paid for. I don’t coordinate stories with sponsors or potential advertisers, nor do I solicit sponsorships or ads. We pay our own travel expenses for these conferences.

SiliconANGLE Media also runs an analyst community and market research service, Wikibon, which does research for technology customers, including a paid subscription service. Some Wikibon reports and related content run on SiliconANGLE.com. Stories based on Wikibon research are written based on editorial value and are not influenced by those companies or by clients.

I don’t write or consult for any other companies. I accept no money from any company I cover or from public relations firms, and I don’t accept gifts from these companies. I occasionally use a product offered for review or an early look for use in stories but return it as promptly as possible.

My investments are largely index mutual funds, none focused specifically on technology companies, and a 401(k) invested in general mutual funds. I own no individual stocks or options.

I transitioned by business away from journalism and into social media and content marketing in 2006. In 2014 I returned to a journalism role as enterprise editor of SiliconANGLE. However, I continue to maintain paid business relationships with several corporate clients, including companies that SiliconANGLE covers. I also occasionally write blog posts and white papers and moderate webcasts under contract with the custom content division of publishers International Data Group and Quinstreet.

I do not believe that working with corporate clients should cast doubt upon a journalist’s credibility as long as full disclosure is made and certain boundaries respected. I have spent most of my career as a reporter and editor, and journalism is in my blood. My credibility is my most important asset, and it is never for sale. Even during my term as a full-time marketing consultant, I contributed reported articles to a variety of independent media outlets and was on the editorial masthead of BtoB magazine for seven years. My judgment has never been openly questioned either by my editors or my corporate clients.

I have disclosed my editorial role at SiliconANGLE fully to all my clients and have made it clear that our business relationship can never affect my judgment as a journalist. Nevertheless, to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest I have removed myself from any direct coverage of companies with which I have a direct business relationship.

I occasionally write articles and case studies for Wikibon clients under a contractual agreement with Wikibon. Those articles are bylined by me and labeled as sponsored content. I also occasionally serve as a host or co-host on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE’s traveling video platform. In some cases, I am paid for these engagements by SiliconANGLE, which in turn is paid by sponsor companies. I am given complete control over what questions to ask guests on theCUBE and what comments to make about the sponsoring companies, even if those comments should be unflattering. Although I am never instructed what to say on theCUBE, some guests are provided by sponsors under their contract terms.

My investment assets are managed on my behalf by certified financial planner who works with a professional portfolio management firm. I am unaware of the individual securities within the portfolio.
